Jk, but I do need coffee and cat food.
The Letter, the one you’re reading, has ballooned. Its tagline was once: Short, sweet, and once a week. The short part sailed.
Rhythm, energy, movement—I value them greatly. It’s why I move my furniture more often than you do. It’s why this letter is shorter than usual (don’t hold your breath!).
We must ebb. We must flow. We must keep it interesting. If you knew what you were going to get every time you opened this letter, you’d be bored. I’d be bored. And, that’s not cool!
When you open this letter, if you’re even moderately surprised and you smile once, we’re going places. If neither of these happens, we’re screwed. At least I am. Onward to a surprise and a smile…
B is for Boundaries
Whether you’re wrestling with boundaries at the moment or you want to study up for next time, listen to this podcast episode from The Art of Accomplishment. Joe is wise.
A boundary is something YOU will do if someone does X. Nobody has to change their behavior for you. But you can change yours.
After listening to a few Art of Accomplishment podcast episodes, I sent them feedback:
“I found The Art of Accomplishment podcast recently and I'm blown away by your wisdom, hypnotized by your voice, and in awe of your clarity and warmth. The fucks and shits you drop now and again balance this just right. What a gem!”
They responded with:
“That feels so good to hear, Simone.”
Practicing my boundary-work, I responded:
“If you continue emailing me, I’ll stop listening to your podcast.”
That last line was a joke (and a boundary :).
Show Up
By golly, Lady Dynamite on Netflix is funny.
Warning: your humor must be lit to like this quirky show, and I trust it is!
If not, use this website to find something that suits you. Cool, right?
If all else fails, do as the section header says: Show up! The world needs more yous.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be?
I did NOT just drop a Marianne Williamson quote on you. Oh, yes, I did.
Show up!
Write it Right
I have a disease. I rewrite sentences in my head all day, every day.
So, I taught a lesson in a mentor session for Write of Passage on a phenomenon I call “2 becomes 1.” Sentences that stumble before landing.
Lesson time.
Each word is a stepping stone on your sentence’s path. The object is to stick the landing in as few words as possible—my object, at least.
Love it, I subscribed to the podcast!
I love the quirkiness the overall quirkiness I've seen, but especially the first section in this letter.
Always love hearing what you have to say, your writing opens up new avenues in my way of thinking! Thank you.
